Online destinations for streaming sport in Australia

Love watching live? These platforms are a sports fan’s dreams come true.

For a true sports fan, every day can be Sunday, with matches being played all over the world at all hours.

Catching your favourite players in action doesn’t have to mean gluing yourself to the couch now that the sporting world is catching up with live streaming.

In recent months, major events including the Olympic Games, the Australian Open and important cricket matches have been broadcast live over the internet, allowing people to watch from just about anywhere via their browser, rather than via a traditional TV screen.

If you want to watch sports being played in Australia while you’re on the go or from a device separate to your television, here are some of your options:

NRL Digital Pass

View all the action of the NRL on your phone, tablet or computer through the official NRL Digital Pass website and app. Choose a weekly or monthly subscription and access every game of the 2017 Premiership season, using the same login across multiple devices.

There are more than 200 matches on the schedule this year and over 400 past games available to re-watch on demand. The app also gives viewers the chance to see live press conferences and in-match scoring highlights.

Foxtel Go / Play

As a Foxtel subscriber, you can upload the Foxtel Go app to your mobile device and access a number of Foxtel channels as well as live sporting events.

If the match of the year clashes with your partner or housemate’s favourite TV show you’re in luck, as you can watch on two devices at once using the same login.

You can also check out Foxtel Play. This app streams TV over the internet, letting you watch on a number of different devices, including Xbox, your connected TV and Sony PlayStation.

The sports you can access and watch live include AFL, NRL, motorsports, soccer and US football.

Cricket Australia

The home of Australian cricket, Cricket Australia lets you follow some of the most important locally played matches with a combination of free and subscription based live streams.

These include the Sheffield Shield, the Commonwealth Bank Test Series, the KFC T20 Big Bash League and Commonwealth Bank Women’s International Series.

Fans of the bat and the ball can purchase a Cricket Australia Live annual pass for around $30 or choose to view for 24 hours at a cost of around $6. For some Optus customers, live streaming of cricket matches is free.

AFL Live

Download the AFL Live app and commit to one of the subscription packages (weekly, monthly, annual or season pass for some Telstra customers) to stream every footy match live on a mobile or tablet.

Membership will let you watch from up to five supported devices, including iPhone, Android and Windows devices. Viewers will have access to the 2017 Toyota Premiership Season as well as the finals series.

AFL Live enhances the footy fan experience with live stats, live goal charts, player heatmaps and coverage of other special events. If you miss a match, you can use the app to replay each match quarter by quarter.

Watch AFL

Many live streaming apps are geo-restricted, meaning you can only view if you’re within Australia. Watch AFL gives homesick footy fans the chance to live stream from overseas.

Subscribers get access to every 2017 Toyota AFL Premiership Season and Finals Series Match, plus every JLT Community Series pre-season match live and on demand, with no ad breaks during play.

Netball Live

Keep on top of Suncorp Super Netball from your mobile device for $2.99 per week, or for free for some Telstra customers.

As well as live streaming every game of the Netball season live for Australian viewers, Netball Live shares live scores, custom team content, match highlight videos, previews and statistics.

Full match replays are on offer as well as live coverage of all Australian based test matches played by Australia’s national netball team, the Diamonds.

7Live

If it’s on one of the Channel 7 stations, you can watch it online via the 7Live website. This includes access to a constant live streaming of horse racing via racing.com.

In summer, you can catch all the action of the Australian Open and more via the 7Tennis platform.

tenplay

Via the free to view tenplay app, motorsport fans can access live streams of a range of motorsports.

This platform also lets viewers catch up on World Rugby Sevens Highlights.

My Sport Live

Prefer sports that are less than mainstream? You’re in luck with My Sport Live. On the live streaming schedule for this platform in 2017 are the Touch Football Australia National Touch League and the Bocce Federation of Victoria’s Bocce Smash Tournaments.

In March, viewers can tune in for the 2017 Arnold Classic, a multi sports festival being hosted in Melbourne by none other than Mr Schwarzenegger himself. Other highlights include the Australian Calisthenic Federation National Championships and 2017 Australian Kart Championship rounds.

If you missed the live stream of the muscle-bound Australian Armwrestling Championships in December, or any previous events for that matter, you can still catch the action by checking out My Sport Live’s On Demand catchup videos.

The rights to sports broadcasts are hotly contested and held on to, which is why you often have to pay for the pleasure of viewing online and why there is sometimes limited availability.

With increased technology you can expect these live streams to increase in quality and reliability with each season.
