A guide to nbn™ business

When it comes to nbn and your business it’s all about having access to a fast and reliable access network with plenty of options to suit your specific needs.

Here’s a quick guide on what you should take into account when selecting the right plan for your business through your phone and internet provider.

Depending on the size of your organisation and your specific needs, you can talk to your provider about a higher priority service with a business grade product to minimise downtime and ensure you get a better level of speed – particularly for your mission critical applications.

You should also chat to your provider about whether you need more phone lines, bandwidth and data, and whether you need an enhanced Service Level Agreement (eSLA). Once you know what you need, you can then look at choosing a plan based on one of nbn’s superfast^ wholesale speeds.

Keep in mind that nbn is a wholesaler - you will need to speak to your phone and internet provider about a plan or package that works best for you and your business.

Picking a solution that works for you

Many businesses need unique data and communication solutions – something that’s tailor made to ensure your organisation runs smoothly. You may be a medium-sized company with multiple phone lines, or an organisation that uses high levels of data – either way, when you chat to your phone and internet provider, make sure you understand your own needs. That way, when you’re considering a bundle or package through your provider you can pick a solution that works for you.

Multiple
phone lines

This applies to any business that needs more than one phone line. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a call centre, or a medium sized organisation – when you’re looking for a bundle, ensure your phone and internet provider has an option for multiple phone lines.

Communication and data options

Every business has different communication and data needs. You may be a head office with a need to chat regularly via video with your interstate offices. You could be a photographic business with a need to upload large digital files on a regular basis. Whatever you do, it’s important you look at your specific situation before you speak to your phone and internet provider about the data and bandwidth packages they offer. Ideally, you should look for a bundle that includes business grade products with dedicated data services that will keep your mission critical applications up and running.

Next
level support

If you have business critical data needs, always be certain your phone and internet provider has an enhanced Service Level Agreement (eSLA) in place with your bundle or package. This means nbn will provide a higher level of support to your provider, who in turn will be able to provide a better level of support to you.

Choosing the right speed for your business

Choosing your speed is a great place to start, particularly for small businesses that need to migrate across with minimum hassle and fuss. This includes home offices, small retail outlets, cafes, restaurants and small offices with 1 or 2 people.

To start, you’ll need to speak to your provider about their choice of plans based on nbn’s superfast speed tiers^. These range from standard speeds (nbn™ 25*, nbn™ 50* and nbn™ 100*) all the way through to business grade speeds. For small businesses who want to transform their experience into something spectacular – we recommend you consider a retail plan based on nbn™ 100*. For medium size businesses, you may want to talk to your provider about business grade symmetrical upload and download speeds, particularly if your organisation deals with large files and high bandwidth applications on a regular basis e.g. 100Mbps download and 100Mbps upload.

For businesses with basic phone or internet usage, consider a retail plan based on nbn™ 12*. nbn™ 12* is not considered a superfast broadband plan^ and may be similar to what many businesses in Australia may experience on ADSL2. Speak to your phone and internet provider about the plan that best suits your needs.

*nbn™ is a provider of wholesale speeds to internet service providers. Your experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn™ network, is determined by your service provider and the plan you choose and depends on the technology over which services are delivered to your premises and some factors outside our control (like your equipment quality and software). nbn™ wholesale speed tiers available to your internet service provider vary depending on the access technology in your area.

^Superfast means wholesale download speed above 25 Mbps as defined by the ACCC
