What you need to know

Special Services are a set of business telecommunication products delivered on copper, aside from your standard landline phone or internet services. These include, but are not limited to, Ethernet Lite, Frame Relay, Megalink, DDS Fastway, Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and Customnet. For a full list of Special Services that may be disconnected, please visit the Affected Special Services page.

For most businesses, switching these services over is not an automatic process - if your Special Services are affected (check the Affected Special Services page) you’ll need to arrange new services before your expected disconnection date, or risk losing access to your critical services#. Make sure you’re prepared; we recommend you contact your phone and internet provider at least six months in advance so you have enough time to get your new systems up and running as there are a number of steps involved in switching to the nbn™ broadband access network.

Step 1: Identify your Special Services that will be disconnected

As a business owner you need to identify the existing connected Special Services in your business. This can be done by knowing the affected product types and by reviewing the services and invoices operating at each business location.

Speak to your provider if you're unsure of what those services are.

Step 2: Check the disconnection date that is expected to apply to your Special Services with our disconnection date tool

Use the disconnection date tool to determine the expected disconnection date for your Special Services.

  • Find your address
  • Select the Special Services that are applicable to your business
  • If your Special Services are subject for disconnection, you will be presented with the relevant expected disconnection date

If the disconnection date tool is not able to provide a disconnection date for your Special Services, we recommend you contact your current provider for more information.^

Step 3: Speak to your provider and take action to switch

Your provider can help you arrange the migration of your Special Services. nbn will establish a network connection and service when it receives an order from a provider.

Follow your provider's instructions, and take action to switch; we recommend at least six months before the applicable expected disconnection date for your Special Services. Identifying the locations of your existing services, the products you have at that location and then planning the migration date with your provider is important to achieving business continuity during the migration of Special Services.

# Disconnection dates vary and not all Special Services will be disconnected – whether a service will be disconnected, and the timing of disconnection will depend on factors including the type of Special Service, when the nbn™ broadband access network is available, which nbn™ access technology is available and whether Telstra has issued a BAU product exit in respect of a Special Service. To find out if your services will be affected, and applicable disconnection dates, contact your current phone or internet service provider.

^ Only premises located in FTTP, FTTN and FTTB, as covered by the Temporary Special Services (TSS) White Papers are currently subject to Special Services disconnection.
