NBN Co offers further fibre upgrades as part of $4.5 billion plan
- Plans based on the nbn Home Ultrafast speed tier, offering peak download speeds of 500 Mbps to close to 1 Gbps3, already available to 4.4 million premises across Australia via Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) and Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) networks.
- From today, more than 50,000 Fibre to the Node (FTTN) premises become eligible to upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) enabling access to nbn Home Ultrafast, on demand1,2. This will rise to 230,000 eligible premises by mid-year and approximately 600,000 premises by year end.
- By the end of 2023, up to 8 million premises in total will be eligible to access nbn Home Ultrafast, offering wholesale download speeds of 500 Mbps to close to 1 Gbps.
NBN Co is on track to enable up to 8 million premises across Australia to access nbn Home Ultrafast by the end of next year.
More than 4.4 million premises connected to the network can already access nbn Home Ultrafast, with 2.4 million premises able to access wholesale download speeds of 500 Mbps to close to 1 Gbps via Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) and around 2 million premises able to access wholesale download speeds of close to 1 Gbps via Fibre to the Premises (FTTP).
From today, NBN Co is inviting more than 50,000 customers currently served by Fibre to the Node (FTTN) to upgrade to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP).
To trigger a full fibre upgrade, eligible customers will need to place an order with a participating retailer for a plan based on an eligible wholesale speed tier. These include nbn’s three highest speed tiers: nbn® Home Fast, which offers wholesale download speeds of up to 100 Mbps; nbn® Home Superfast, which offers wholesale download speeds of up to 250 Mbps, or nbn® Home Ultrafast (FTTP)1,2, which offers wholesale download speeds of close to 1 Gbps3,4.
As part of the company’s $4.5 billion network upgrade program, nbn has so far announced the suburbs and towns across Australia where up to 1.6 million premises currently served by FTTN will become eligible to upgrade to FTTP.
Throughout the year, the company is planning to enable around 60,000 FTTN premises to be made ready to order higher speed services per month, on average, with a target of making an additional 230,000 FTTN premises eligible to upgrade by 30 June 2022 and approximately 600,000 FTTN premises to be eligible by 31 December 2022.
To find out if their premises may be eligible to upgrade from FTTN to FTTP, customers are invited to register for updates at nbn.com.au/fttpupgrade. The website includes links to participating retailers.
By the end of 2023 up to 2 million premises currently served by FTTN are expected to become eligible to upgrade to FTTP and able to access download speeds of close to 1 Gbps3,4, on demand.

“We have so far identified the suburbs and towns across Australia where customers living and working in 1.6 million premises will be able to access the highest speeds currently available on the nbn network, with download speeds of close to 1 Gbps.
“We are now inviting more than 50,000 FTTN premises to upgrade to full fibre.
“Each month throughout this year, we expect to make an additional 60,000 or so premises currently served by FTTN eligible for FTTP upgrades, giving around 600,000 households and businesses access to our highest speed services by the end of 2022.
“With more devices connected in almost every home, and more people working from home, studying from home and streaming entertainment, the need for speed is becoming more important.
“We are on track to achieve our goal of enabling around 8 million premises, or up to 75 per cent of homes and businesses on the fixed line network, to access nbn’s highest speed tiers with wholesale download speeds of 500 Mbps to close to 1 Gbps by the end of 2023.”
Additional suburbs and towns revealed
Today’s announcement also includes confirmation of a significant number of additional suburbs and towns where some premises will also become eligible for upgrades from FTTN to FTTP, providing access to faster speed plans by the end of 2023.
These suburbs and towns were included in initial scoping of the project but have been subject to specific survey, design and construction works before the company could confirm they would be included in the network upgrades.

2 Conditions, eligibility criteria and costs will apply. Eligibility criteria is expected to include, among other things, being designated by nbn as a simple premises (eg. standalone premises or Single Dwelling Unit (SDU)) and once the program is available for an eligible premises, placing an order for an nbn® powered plan based on an eligible wholesale speed tier. Additional costs may apply to providers, who may choose to pass this charge onto their customers.
3 Regardless of the retail service you purchase, the actual wholesale speeds delivered by nbn’s highest wholesale speed tiers of 500 to close to 1000 Mbps will be less than 1Gbps due to equipment and network limitations and the peak information rate may fall anywhere in this range. In addition, the HFC Home Ultrafast bandwidth profile downstream service provided to retail providers is a ranged profile with a maximum sustained information rate of 750Mbps. Reference to speeds are not end user speeds; they are wholesale layer 2 peak information rate bandwidth provided to retail providers. An end customer’s experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn network, depends on some factors outside our control (like equipment quality, software, and how your retail service provider designs its network) and the nbn technology used for your connection.
4 An end customer’s experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn® broadband access network, depends on the nbn® access network technology and configuration over which services are delivered to their premises, whether they are using the internet during the busy period, and some factors outside of NBN Co’s control (like their equipment quality, software, chosen broadband plan, signal reception, or how their provider designs its network).
